The Role of Nutrition in Health and Disease Part 1
In this chapter we will review the importance diet and nutrition has in our health and what we see when diet is suboptimal. Diet has an incredibly strong link to how we feel and various conditions commonly seen in clinical practice. We will explore in detail some of the evidence demonstrating this, focusing on high impact factor journals and the best available research.

Macro- and Micronutrients
Here, we discuss the difference between “sufficient” and “optimal” macro- and micronutrient intake and why this matters, and why subclinical deficiencies can be relevant using Magnesium as an example. We go on to discuss what is meant by a “Healthy Diet” and what foods are advised to be increased, substituted or avoided. This forms the basis of recommendations that can be used to support someone in improving their health through their diet using a lifestyle medicine approach.

The Microbiome
In this chapter we define the microbiome and the nature of its relationship to us, and the food we eat. We review the important roles it plays in human health and the links with disease, before going on to discuss how imbalance and low diversity can have a strong impact on our health. The factors supporting a healthy microbiome are discussed including short chain fatty acids and cruciferous vegetable, and those factors that can lead to poor microbiome health.

Gathering Information About Diet and Nutrition: Part 1
In this chapter we discuss concepts and strategies to help in your information gathering and assessment of clients and patients. There is a lot of information, particularly when you consider not just the “what” but also the “when”, “how”, “why”, “with whom…” of diet and nutrition. This means that frameworks and tools are highly valuable and we will review some of these here that you can use.

Intervention Strategies for Diet and Nutrition
In this chapter we discuss concepts to help you in supporting persons through diet and nutrition. We cover frameworks and tips to help with this, emphasising the “when” and “how” aspects as well as the “what” someone could consider eating more of or avoid. Whilst there is not a generic list of tips and recommendations you can give, since every person has individualised needs and context, we will cover a list of common interventions that might be useful to consider.
